Match of the day:

ITALY - POLAND 1:4

Highlights and statistics >>

The best match of the day we could saw right at the beginning when Italy and Poland met. The 4:1 result for Poland may seem clear cut, but it was a hard fight. The Poles led 3:0 after 28 minutes, but visually it was a very balanced and attractive clash. The Italian team maybe seemed like they we down and out just waiting for the ref to blow the final whistle. But after their first goal, they showed heroic mentality. They were only centimetres away from scoring on several occasions and Poland were terrified at times but when the fourth goal went in at the very end of the match, it was game over.

Team of the day:

HUNGARY

The Hungarians are amongst the biggest favourites of the tournament and they confirmed their role perfectly in their first match against Portugal, which they won 5:0. Hungary put in a dominant performance, played a beautiful game and showed form worthy of a title winners. Take a look at the match highlights and statistics for Hungary - Portugal >>

We’re also highlighting individual performances and on the first day of EMF EURO 2022 it was definitely Máté Suscsák from Hungary that caught the eye. He scored two goals and created many offensive actions during the dominant victory over Portugal (5:0). The 24-year-old Suscsák is the only player who managed to score two goals on the opening day.

Surprise of the day:

CZECH REPUBLIC - FRANCE 1:1

The biggest surprise on day one was the draw between Czech Republic and France. The reigning European champions came to Košice as one of the tournament favourites, but the French surprised them. After a nervous start, the holders took the lead in the 41st minute but the French team were extremely dangerous in the dying minutes of the match and after a beautiful goal by Schiaib Skander in stoppage time, earned a well-deserved point.
